פרופ' אפלבאום הוא מבכירי הפסיכיאטרים בעולם בתחום האתיקה והמשפט בפסיכיאטריה.
בעברו היה נשיא האיגוד הפסיכיאטרי האמריקאי ונשיא האקדמיה האמריקאית לפסיכיאטריה ומשפט. כיום הוא מנהל היחידה למשפט, אתיקה ופסיכיאטריה באוניברסיטת קולומביה, וכן עומד בראש וועדות מקצועיות מרכזיות, כולל:

The Standing Committee on Ethics of the World Psychiatric Association
Dollard Professor of Psychiatry, Medicine and Law, Director of the Center for Law, Ethics and Psychiatry, Columbia University.
