Purpose and Objectives

The purpose of this course is to introduce advanced topics, terminology, concepts, theories, and experimental procedures entailed in the scientific study of binaural  hearing.  The course is based on the assumption that the audience has knowledge in hearing science, audiology, and advanced understanding of cochlear and hearing functions.

Major topics

21.3.2018

1.Acoustics of sound: Brief review of the physical laws underlying generation and the physical means by which sounds arrive at the ears to produce binaural cues. Manner by which interaural differences in time, intensity and time in the envelope of high-frequency modulated signals.

  1. Anatomy and physiology of the binaural system:
    • Neural activation in the auditory system; focusing on the role of phase  locking of the auditory nerve, enhancement of phase locking at the level of the cochlear nucleus.
    • Role of excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms and models accounting for circuitry in the brainstem.
    • Auditory function involved at the thalamus and cortex, integration of binaural cues and multi-sensory cues, role of audio-visual integration.
    • Central auditory pathways and auditory plasticity, role of experience and deprivation from studies in animal models.
    • Neuroimaging studies on binaural hearing.

22.3.2018

  1. Perception and psychological aspects of binaural hearing in normal and hearing impaired populations
  • Minimum audible angle (sound source discrimination)
  • Sound localization in azimuth (horizontal plane)
  • Understanding speech in noise:  -Spatial release from masking

          -Binaural masking level differences

  • Precedence effect (echo suppression)
  • Abnormal aspects of binaural hearing
    • Binaural hearing with one ear; the disadvantages of monaural hearing
    • single sided deafness
  • Binaural hearing in hearing impaired listeners – deficits in perception, binaural vs bilateral hearing
  • Bilateral hearing: two  hearing aids, electroacoustic, two cochlear implants
  • Auditory neuro-plasticity- what have we learned so far on binaural hearing
  • Future technological and engineering developments in binaural stimulation
