Research areas

We focus on the effect of pregnancy microenvironment on the pathogenesis of cancer. In particular, we study the interaction between human placenta to breast and ovarian cancer cells. Furthermore, we explore pathways involved in placental implantation that resembles cancer implantation and may shed light on metastases growth.

Cancer is coincides about one in 1,000 pregnancies. Very little information exists regarding the effect of pregnancy on cancer cells and the effect of cancer therapy on pregnancy. One of the most common malignant tumors associated with pregnancy is breast carcinoma. Pregnant women with breast cancer present with a more advanced disease compared with non-pregnant women. Nevertheless, metastases to the product of conception are a rare event. In the last few years we focused on understanding the pathways and mechanisms involved in eliminating cancer growth in the placental area on the one hand and in facilitating cancer progression during pregnancy on the other.  Our research entails the use of cell lines, explants of human placenta and a variety of cellular and molecular techniques. Furthermore, we explore new pathways involved in placental implantation and the effect of chemotherapeutic drugs on these pathways. Understanding the causes for the advanced cancer during pregnancy and the placental mechanisms for eliminating metastases may afford novel and more efficient treatment for the patients.
