We study the genetic regulation of bone mass and the genetic causes of bone disease, with a focus on bone formation and strength. Using forward and reverse genetics, we investigate phenotypes critical to bone quality that are difficult to study in human populations, including bone composition, formation, and mineralization by the osteoblast. We also participate in human cohort studies to understand the etiology of musculoskeletal disease and to determine the biological function of genes associated with musculoskeletal traits. In addition, we study the diagnosis and consequences of postoperative infections, particularly those associated with spinal instrumentation
